Buses refusing to take child not acceptable, Children’s Commissioner says – 1News

New Zealand Children’s Commissioner Claire Achmad has stated We see unacceptable that an 11-year-old student was denied boarding on public buses after she mistakenly left her wallet at home while traveling to school.

The incident was brought to light during the week preceding May 11, 2026, by the student’s grandmother, who reported that the child was left in tears and traumatised. According to the grandmother, the student realized she was without her wallet when she was 20 minutes away from her home and at least an hour’s walk from her school.

The grandmother told RNZ that two separate public buses refused to allow the 11-year-old to board. She stated that she was really angry and upset about the situation, noting that children are taught they can trust adults and that good adults will help them.

Claire Achmad told RNZ that the event was likely upsetting and stressful for the child.

No child should be left behind, as Auckland Transport has acknowledged and I really don’t think what occurred in this situation was acceptable.

Auckland Transport told RNZ that its expectation is that no child should be left behind in such circumstances. The agency confirmed it has contacted the bus operator, Kinetic, regarding the incident.

Achmad described the acknowledgment from Auckland Transport as a positive outcome and a clear message that these situations should be avoided.

The Commissioner indicated that she wants to understand the policies currently in place and stated she would be taking an active interest in the subsequent developments. Achmad further asserted that transport providers have a responsibility to ensure that children are not put in harm’s way.
