Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh is experiencing a significant offensive slump to begin the 2026 season, characterized by a high volume of strikeouts and a lack of power production. Through the first 10 games of the season, Raleigh has tied the MLB record for strikeouts in a team’s first 10 games, fanning 20 times in 38 at-bats.

Raleigh’s traditional statistics reflect these struggles, as he has recorded a .132 batting average with only five hits in 38 at-bats. Of those five hits, only two have been doubles, and he has yet to hit a home run this season.

Advanced Metrics and Whiff Rates

While the traditional stats are poor, advanced metrics indicate a more concerning trend regarding Raleigh’s swing. He is currently struggling specifically with fastballs located over the heart of the plate.

According to data analyzed by baseball analyst Callaghan Bluechel, Raleigh has a 52.9% whiff rate on fastballs over the heart of the plate. This rate is the worst among 196 qualified hitters in MLB, exceeding the median by approximately four standard deviations.

This performance is significantly below the league average, where the whiff rate on similar pitches is approximately 25%. Raleigh is currently missing more than half of the fastballs he swings at that are located in the middle of the strike zone.

Context and Previous Performance

The current slump is particularly notable given Raleigh’s performance in the previous year. He is coming off a 2025 season in which he hit 60 home runs, establishing himself as a central figure in the Mariners’ lineup.

Context and Previous Performance

Raleigh has faced similar challenges at the start of previous campaigns. In the prior season, he also began slowly, recording only two hits in his first 20 at-bats.

However, analysts suggest that the current situation is different due to the frequency and nature of the whiffs. During a game on Sunday, April 5, 2026, Raleigh appeared in a bases-loaded situation and failed to make contact with the ball on any of his three swings.

Impact on the Seattle Mariners

Raleigh’s inability to find his rhythm at the plate is viewed as a major concern for a Mariners team with high expectations for the 2026 season. Because he is a key component of the offensive strategy, a prolonged slump could negatively impact the team’s early-season momentum.

The organization will now need to work with Raleigh to diagnose and correct the specific swing issues causing him to miss fastballs within the strike zone. If he cannot reduce his whiff rate, he may struggle to replicate the power production seen during his 60-homer season in 2025.
