Jakarta – A video of Miftah Maulana Habiburrahman,better known as Gus Miftah,using profanity towards a street vendor selling iced tea has sparked outrage across the country. The incident has fueled calls for President Prabowo Subianto to remove Gus Miftah from his position as Special Envoy for Religious Harmony and the Development of Places of Worship.
Gerindra Party Deputy Chairman Budi Djiwandono expressed disappointment over Gus miftah’s remarks, emphasizing the importance of respectful conduct from leaders.
“We regret any statements that are inappropriate. Such actions should be evaluated, especially when they come from someone in a leadership position,” Djiwandono stated at the Parliament Complex in Jakarta on Wednesday.
While acknowledging the public outcry, Djiwandono deferred the decision on Gus Miftah’s future to President Prabowo.
“We will leave any decisions regarding this matter to the President. We accept all input and criticism from the public,” he added.
Gus miftah, however, declined to comment on the mounting pressure for his removal.
“Don’t ask me about that, don’t ask me about that. it’s not within my authority, it’s not within my authority,” he told reporters at the Ora Aji Islamic Boarding School in Sleman, yogyakarta, on Wednesday.
Despite the controversy, Gus Miftah expressed his intention to reflect on his actions and learn from the experience.
“I also want to thank netizens. As of their comments, the video went viral. The lesson for me is to be more self-aware, introspective, and learn from this,” he said.
Previously, Head of the Presidential Communication Office (PCO) Hasan Nasbi revealed that President Prabowo had already reprimanded Gus Miftah over the incident.
