Shots were fired at the Washington Hilton during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, turning the annual black-tie event into a scene of chaos and requiring an immediate response from security personnel.

President Donald Trump had taken his seat on the dais just minutes before the incident occurred, engaging in conversation with other VIPs when a series of loud bangs echoed through the ballroom. Guests in formal attire reacted swiftly, ducking for cover under tables as Secret Service agents moved to secure the area.

The rapid evacuation of Trump and First Lady Melania Trump from the room was carried out by Secret Service agents, who escorted them back to the White House. Banquet chairs were overturned and maroon napkins littered the floor in the aftermath of the disturbance.

Law enforcement officials later confirmed that a man armed with multiple weapons had approached a security checkpoint in the hotel lobby outside the ballroom. He was intercepted and apprehended by Secret Service agents before reaching the main event space.

FBI Director Kash Patel informed reporters that investigators recovered a long gun and shell casings at the scene, providing physical evidence related to the discharge of firearms during the incident.

In the wake of the shooting, the White House Correspondents’ Association announced the cancellation of the dinner but stated that it would be rescheduled within 30 days, preserving the tradition of the annual gathering despite the disruption.

President Trump, still dressed in his black tie and tuxedo following the evacuation, addressed reporters at a news conference where he reflected on the moment the shots were fired. He said he initially believed the loud noises might have been caused by a waiter dropping a serving tray but quickly realized the true nature of the disturbance.

“It was either a tray or a bullet,” Trump stated. “I was hoping it was a tray. But it wasn’t.”

The strong odor of gunpowder remained noticeable in the air after the incident, contributing to the sense of urgency and disbelief among attendees as they processed what had occurred at one of Washington’s most prominent social events.
