Greensboro, NC – While many in the field at the Wyndham Championship are battling to extend their seasons and secure their PGA Tour cards, rising star Cameron Young has his sights set on a more aspiring prize: a spot on the Ryder Cup team. Currently sitting at No.40 in the FedEx Cup standings, young is in a comfortable position to make the playoffs, but his focus is firmly on the international competition that looms later this fall.
Young, who earned an economics degree from nearby Wake Forest, is using the greensboro event as a springboard for his larger goals. “For me it’s not necessarily about this week,” Young stated. “I’ve got a goal. In the middle of September I’d like to be in New York playing on that Ryder Cup team. If I can achieve that, I can achieve a lot of things over these next four weeks. So I’m trying to keep that in mind rather than the little things along the way.”
The PGA of America’s decision to host the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black on Long Island, a familiar stomping ground for Young who grew up in New York, has made this event particularly meaningful. Even a victory at Sedgefield Country Club would only propel him to No. 15 in the Ryder Cup standings, with the top six automatically qualifying after the BMW Championship.
“Not that winning a tournament here would be little, but I think for me kind of looking off in the distance in that way I think will help me just keep trying to trust what I’m doing and build some confidence along the way,” Young added, emphasizing his long-term perspective.
Playoff Picture Intensifies for Others
The pressure is palpable for players further down the FedEx Cup standings. Max Homa, at 1 under with five holes remaining, is in desperate need of birdies to avoid missing the playoffs.Adam Scott, currently No. 85, was at 4 under and navigating the 15th hole, also looking to solidify his postseason status.
For players like Michael Kim, who was at 1 under with five holes to play, and Davis Thompson, who was at 2 under with four holes left, every shot counts in their quest to make the FedEx Cup playoffs.
Woodland Delivers Moment of Brilliance
Gary Woodland provided the highlight of the day with a spectacular albatross on the par-5 fifth hole, holing out his 7-iron for a rare 2. He finished the round with a 64 and believes a strong performance this week could put him in contention for the postseason.
“I’ve been playing well for a while, and Randy Smith, my coach, has been bugging me to stay patient, just try to hit the shot that’s required and have fun,” Woodland shared. “When you’re not getting the results you want, that’s the hardest part is probably to have a little fun. I’m in a lot better place than I was a year ago, so trying to enjoy it a little bit.It was nice to see some go in today.”
Meissner Fights for Card and Future
The stakes are also incredibly high for players like Grayson Murray, who was at 3 under with five holes to play, and Pierceson Coody, who was at 2 under with four holes remaining.
Simultaneously occurring, Michael Meissner, sitting at No.152 in the FedEx Cup standings, faces a must-win scenario to advance. Beyond the immediate playoff push, Meissner is also focused on finishing in the top 100 by the end of the fall events to secure his PGA Tour card for the following season. The pressure is on, but the chance to play for his future is a powerful motivator.
