Campus Clashes: Police Crackdown on Pro-Palestinian Protests at American Universities

As pro-Palestinian and anti-Israel protests spread on American college campuses in connection with the war in the Gaza Strip between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas, school authorities and the police began to disperse them forcefully.

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) announced on the 25th (local time) that 93 protesters were arrested at the University of Southern California (USC).

The LAPD said, “There were no injuries during the arrest,” and warned, “At the request of the university, police will continue to be dispatched to the campus, and if unknown persons enter the r campus and congregating, they will be arrested for trespassing.”

Ohio State University also announced that students who refused to disperse were being arrested. However, the police denied that they used tear gas.

However, this prompted a backlash from students who took part in the protest.

The school said in a statement, “We understand the disappointment of canceling the event,” but said individual graduation ceremonies, where students would go on stage and receive diplomas, would go ahead as planned.
