Can Kim Gun-woo surpass Son Myung-oh… “Another homework… The excitement is also great.”

Netflix’s ‘The Glory’ and ‘Son Myung-oh’ (Kim Kun-woo) became a representative figure in school violence cases. In the drama, he is one of the villains who brutally harass ‘Moon Dong-eun’ (Song Hye-kyo). Nowadays, when an incident of school violence comes to light in the entertainment industry, there are more cases that compare it to ‘it was like Son Myung-oh’. It was the same when Hwang Young-woong was mentioned from the recent MBN audition ‘Burning Trotman’. Kim Gun-woo (31) said, “I’m not going to be offended,” but said confidently, “I feel sorry for my character being tied (with the school violence incident ).”
“Myung-oh wanted him to feel like a living creature. It wasn’t well done in terms of acting, but I wanted to put the feeling of a bully somewhere. Instead, I felt I could show myself well in a scene without lines. The gait, the soju drinking scene, the candy biting scene, and the sitting posture were studied. Myung-oh grew up without parents, so there was a possibility that he wouldn’t fall anywhere. I didn’t know if it was a bad thing or a good thing, I did the act of survival to survive. That’s why I wanted him to feel like a life-oriented bully.”
This drama tells the story of Dong-eun, whose soul was shattered by violence as a child, risking her entire life for revenge. After Part 2 was released on the 10th, it caused a sensation by rising to No. 1 on Netflix worldwide. As soon as Kim Eun-sook saw Kim Geon-woo, she thought it was Myeong-oh. I wasn’t at the audition site, but I saw the video and thought ‘this is my friend’. Kim Gun-woo said that he was more attracted to ‘Jeon Jae-joon’ (Park Seong-hoon) than Myeong-oh, and said, “I thought it would be exciting and fun. Do you think Jaejoon did well? Oh, yes,” he laughed. “When I first read the script, I didn’t feel like ‘Myeong-oh is scary’,” she said. I had to like the character, so I kept looking at him, and I felt cute and pure.”
The character was created in reference to American mixed martial artist Nate Diaz. “I only watched Nate Diaz videos for a month,” he said. Even during interviews, I do it when I want to answer, and I don’t when I don’t want to.” “Other character settings were prepared by the stylist team based on the script. It was almost perfect,” he said. “My hair was originally short, so I tied it up. I built a body like a bully with the trainer, and I lost about 3 kg of weight,” he explained.
At the time of the release of Part 1, speculation was rife as to whether Myeong-oh was alive or dead. In Part 2, Myeong-oh was killed by a bottle of alcohol that was hit by ‘Kyung-ran Kim’ (So-yo Ahn), an employee at Jae-joon’s editorial shop. In the first place, Myung-oh demanded 1 billion won by Yeon-jin, saying, “We have evidence of Yoon So-hee’s murder.” He was knocked down by Yeonjin’s alcohol bottle, but he was alive. When Myeong-oh asked for help, Gyeong-red recalled interfering with her several times in the past and committing an impulsive murder. “I went great when I went, and I was satisfied with the ending. It wasn’t much at first, but it gradually increased. I did a lot of research because I wanted to give each god an effect,” he said, “I want to give him 80 points out of 100 points. There are regrets, but at the time, it was the best I could do.”
“Myeong-oh’s biggest bad deed is that he behaved badly sexually. When I saw the scene of Gyeong-red being harassed in episode 16, I thought, ‘So far?’ I was surprised to even want to do it. It is an unforgivable act. The worst villain is definitely ‘Park Yeon-jin’ (Lim Ji-yeon). Isn’t Yeon-jin a criminal by murder? Myeong-oh compared to Yeon-jin… Maybe everyone has a different opinion, but I thought Yeonjin was the worst character. Is there anything you would like to say to people who live like Son Myung-oh? Come to your senses, remove tattoos if you can, and live uprightly. If you are still bullying someone, think and live a good life.”
The confession that Myeong-oh confessed to stewardess Choi Hye-jeong (Cha Joo-young) over the phone also drew attention. Hyejeong hated it to the point of screaming and throwing her phone away. “Myeong-oh absolutely loved Hye-jeong. Yeonjin, Jaejun, and ‘Isara’ (Kim Hierra) were in the same group, and Hyejeong and I were in another group. Although they were friends, they were very much two groups, and Hyejeong (the laundress girl) had a sense of identity as a member of the same class. The feelings accumulated for a long time became an opportunity to confess, saying, ‘I’m going to go to Korea anyway, but if I know, I want to go out with you.’ He is a foreigner, but I look at him with deep impression,” he laughed.
Indeed, Kim Kun-woo had a hard time before being cast in The Glory. In his first drama ‘Fight My Way’ (2012), he made his mark as ‘Go Dong-man’ (Park Seo-joon) the opponent of ‘Kim Tak-soo’, but he did not get much attention after that. On the contrary, as The Glory gains popularity, more and more fans are looking for previous works and recognizing, “Was it Fight for My Way?” “It’s amazing,” he said. “I did several TV pieces, and there was also a video of my acting collection on YouTube. I hope you will also watch the one-act play ‘Meet me in a strange season’ (2022).
When I was in my third year at high school, I started walking the path of an actor by going to an acting academy with a friend. That friend is Lee Sang-jin, who played an active role in the drama ‘Recruit’ (2022). In 2012, he entered Korea National University of Arts as the top of the acting department. Yang Se-jong, who has been eating rice in one pot since his debut, is his college classmate. He must have been motivated when a member of the Han Ye-jong went on a winning streak, but he said, “It was a cheerful heart,” and “I have never felt jealous.”
“Before meeting The Glory, I had a fall and it was a bit difficult. Anyway, I had to be chosen, but there were several situations where I couldn’t. My self-esteem was strong and I endured it. I have too much faith in me. Not that I’m going to become a superstar, but it’s definitely useful, and I thought, ‘I’ve still got something to show you’. I thought, ‘Doesn’t it hurt my pride’ to bend it like this? If all the works I appear in do well, it will be great. It was unfortunate when there was no response, but working hard is the same now and then.”
Kim Kun-woo is scheduled to perform on stage in the musical ‘Paris Bakery’ from May 13th. The Glory was a success at the box office, so I had no choice but to focus on my next film, but it was unexpected that I chose a small theater production. “People say, ‘Why is it a musical all of a sudden?’, but I really wanted to do it and I liked the work, so I chose it. It was half desire to take on a challenge and half aspiration. Paris Bakery deals with family stories and is very warm. He said, “I decided to appear after The Glory. When I reflect on the experience of standing on stage at school, there is joy. You can breathe together and feel alive.”
“I am determined to be called Son of Myeong-oh for a while. I am grateful that The Glory went well, but on the contrary, I had another assignment. The task of ‘Can I create a better character beyond Son Myeong-oh?’ makes me feel good. really i’m dumb Will this bubble burst one day? It’s a phenomenon that has been happening for several decades, so I think it’s a natural thing. I’ve been hearing a lot of good things lately, so I’m trying to keep myself centered. I’m not particularly excited because I’m doing the same thing as before, but I’m also very excited. Because you don’t know what will happen in the future. haha”
