Critical Infrastructure funding Announced
On December 18, 2025, the governments of Canada and Prince Edward Island jointly announced over $8.6 million in funding to establish essential water, wastewater, and stormwater infrastructure for the Hillsborough Park growth in Charlottetown. This investment is designed to support the construction of up to 525 mixed-use housing units, addressing the growing need for housing in the province.
The funding breakdown includes more than $4.3 million from the federal government through the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund (CHIF), matched by a contribution exceeding $4.3 million from the Prince Edward Island Housing Corporation.
Project Details: A Complete Infrastructure Upgrade
The project encompasses a significant infrastructure build, including the construction of a wastewater lifting station and the installation of extensive piping networks. Specifically, the work includes approximately 150 meters of wastewater discharge pipes, 1,684 meters of sanitary pipes, 1,763 meters of water pipes, and 2,901 meters of stormwater pipes. Additionally, the project will incorporate manholes and three retention basins, each approximately 600 square meters in size, to manage rainwater runoff.
Supporting National Housing Goals and Industry Modernization
This infrastructure investment directly supports the Government of Canada’s broader strategy to address the national housing crisis. It also reinforces the mandate of Canada housing,a newly established federal agency focused on increasing the supply of affordable housing, providing financial support to builders, and promoting innovative construction techniques.
The collaborative approach between public and private sectors, coupled with a focus on modernizing the housing industry and creating skilled trades jobs, is central to making housing more accessible and affordable for Canadians.
