Canada Invests $4 Million in Yukon to Combat Gun Violence
Government Invests in Gun Violence Prevention in Yukon
On November 29, 2024, in Whitehorse, Yukon, Brendan Hanley, the Member of Parliament for Yukon, announced a $4 million investment from the Government of Canada. This funding comes from the Gun and Gang Violence Action Fund. It aims to assist community organizations and law enforcement in fighting gun violence and improving community safety.
This funding builds on the success of the Initiative to Take Action Against Gun and Gang Violence (ITAAGGV), which started in 2017. The ITAAGGV supported provinces and territories by providing federal resources to reduce gun violence effectively. It also aided the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) in seizing firearms at the borders.
The ITAAGGV forms a key part of the government’s crime-fighting strategy. It includes funding for border security personnel, stronger cooperation with the United States to combat gun smuggling, and significant updates to firearms laws. The initiative also supports prevention and enforcement to ensure Canadian communities remain safe.
This investment not only strengthens safety measures in Yukon but also instills hope for a future with less gun violence, emphasizing the government’s commitment to protecting its citizens.
