A mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, has left ten people dead, including the female suspect, and more than 25 injured, authorities confirmed on Wednesday, February 10, 2026. The attacks unfolded at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and a nearby residence, marking the deadliest school shooting in Canada since the 1989 École Polytechnique massacre.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) first responded to reports of an active shooter at the school at approximately 1:20 p.m. local time. An emergency alert was issued around 2:15 p.m., urging residents to shelter in place as police secured the area. Schools in the vicinity were placed on lockdown. The alert was finally cancelled at 5:45 p.m..

According to RCMP Superintendent Ken Floyd, investigators have identified the shooter as a woman, but her name has not been released. The motive behind the attacks remains under investigation. “We are not in a place to understand why or what may have motivated this tragedy,” Floyd told reporters.

The initial search of Tumbler Ridge Secondary School revealed six deceased victims. One additional person died while being transported to a hospital. Two further fatalities were discovered at a residence believed to be connected to the shooter, bringing the total death toll to ten. More than 25 people sustained injuries, with two airlifted to hospital with life-threatening conditions.

The town of Tumbler Ridge, population approximately 2,400, is located more than 1,000 kilometers north of Vancouver, near the border with Alberta. Tumbler Ridge Secondary School serves students in grades 7 to 12, with a student body of 175, according to provincial government data.

The RCMP stated that officers entered the school to locate the threat and discovered multiple victims. The suspect was found deceased with what appears to be a self-inflicted injury.

The Peace River South School District confirmed that both Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and Tumbler Ridge Elementary School were placed under a “lockdown and secure and hold” protocol during the incident.

The tragedy has prompted expressions of grief and shock from Canadian leaders. Prime Minister Mark Carney released a statement expressing devastation and gratitude for the first responders. “I join Canadians in grieving with those whose lives have been changed irreversibly today, and in gratitude for the courage and selflessness of the first responders who risked their lives to protect their fellow citizens,” he wrote.

British Columbia Premier David Eby described the event as an “unimaginable tragedy.”

Canada has responded to previous instances of gun violence with stricter gun control measures, including a broadened ban on assault weapons. The government’s response to this latest incident remains to be seen.

Tuesday’s shootings represent Canada’s deadliest rampage since 2020, when a gunman in Nova Scotia killed 13 people and ignited fires that resulted in nine additional deaths. While mass shootings are relatively rare in Canada compared to the United States, the frequency of such events has raised concerns about gun violence and public safety within the country.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not yet released details regarding the relationship between the victims and the shooter. The RCMP has urged anyone with information related to the incident to contact them.
