Canada Takes a Stand: Historic Arms Export Ban to Israel Sparks Global Debate

Canada Imposes Ban on Arms Exports to Israel
Toronto: In a significant move, Canada has imposed a ban on arms exports to Israel, citing the country’s inhumane actions in Gaza. This decision was announced by Canada’s Foreign Minister, Melanie Joly.
According to the announcement, approximately 30 licenses that provide weapons to Israel have been canceled. Furthermore, Canadian-made weapons and other war materials are prohibited from being used in Gaza. This move comes after Canada, the main arms supplier to Israel, initially suspended arms exports on January 8, but continued to allow exports under previously granted permissions, which have now been revoked.
Canada’s Stance on Arms Exports
“Our policy is clear that we will not send any more weapons or other war materials to Gaza,” stated Melanie Joly. The Canadian government has also announced a review of arms exports to countries other than Israel. Notably, Canada is a major arms exporter to Israel, having transferred $26 million worth of weapons in 2021, which decreased to $21 million in 2022.
As a key ally of the United States, the leading arms exporter to Israel, Canada’s decision has reportedly caused disagreement among Israeli leaders. However, the growing pro-Palestinian protests in Canadian universities and the Toronto International Film Festival have prompted the Canadian government to take this stance.
Global Response to Arms Exports to Israel
This is not the first instance of a country halting arms exports to Israel. Recently, Britain also announced the suspension of arms exports to Israel. The British Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, announced the suspension of 30 existing arms licenses out of 350. Other countries, including Italy, Spain, Belgium, and the Netherlands, have also restricted arms exports to Israel.
Global Reactions and Developments
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court of India dismissed a public interest petition seeking a ban on the transfer of Indian arms to Israel, citing allegations of genocide in Gaza. The court ruled that this matter falls under the country’s foreign policy, and therefore, the court has no jurisdiction to intervene.
