Export Shifts and the U.S. Market Reliance

Canada’s commercial reliance on its southern neighbor is shrinking, though the U.S. remains the primary destination for Canadian goods and services. That share marks a decline from roughly 75% in 2024. Much of that recent shift, however, stems from a concentrated group of commodities including oil, gold, and liquefied natural gas. Meanwhile, the European Union and China each attracted about 5% of total Canadian exports.

Groundwork in Asia Offers Alternative Trade Avenues

To insulate the economy from unilateral decisions in Washington, Canadian businesses must develop multiple smaller international markets simultaneously. Japan and South Korea represent immediate priorities due to their purchasing power, robust rule of law, and existing commercial ties. Trade between Canada and both Japan and South Korea is largely tariff-free or heading in that direction, with Canada supplying energy and agricultural products in exchange for batteries, semiconductors, machinery, and shipbuilding capacity.

Energy Exports Cross the Pacific Without Chokepoints

Energy leads Canada’s commercial expansion into Asia, bolstered by significant regional investment. LNG Canada receives backing from Petronas, Korea Gas, Mitsubishi, and PetroChina, enabling shipments across Asian markets. Data from the Canadian Energy Regulator indicates that crude oil exports destined for locations outside the United States reached $10 billion in 2025, averaging roughly 430,000 barrels per day. That figure is up from effectively zero before 2024. Growth has continued into the current year, with Alberta’s oil exports to China and South Korea jumping 122% and 227%, respectively, during the first four months of 2026.

Mutual Ignorance Barrier Slows Commercial Integration

While trade agreements and institutional frameworks exist to support diversification, a significant knowledge gap hampers deeper integration on both sides of the Pacific. Polling conducted by the Angus Reid Institute for the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada reveals that 73% of Canadians report knowing little or nothing about South Korea, 82% know little about Singapore, and 90% know little about Malaysia. A mirror image of this unfamiliarity exists abroad. In a Kadin Business Pulse survey of 276 Indonesian firms, 84% of respondents stated they had never heard of or knew very little about the free trade agreement between Indonesia and Canada. Overcoming this mutual lack of awareness will require private sector leadership to test new markets and forge direct commercial ties.
