Denis Shapovalov Leads Canada to Victory in Davis Cup Finals
Denis Shapovalov, ranked 100th in the world, led Canada to a 2-1 victory over Argentina in the group stage of the Davis Cup Finals, a men’s tennis international team competition.
The 16 teams are divided into four groups of four each in the group stage, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the Final Eight knockout stage, which begins on November 21. This tournament will be held in four cities: Bologna (Italy), Valencia (Spain), Zhuhai (China), and Manchester (England). All matches will be played on indoor hard courts, with winners determined by two singles matches and one doubles match.
In the match between Canada and Argentina held in Manchester, Shapovalov appeared in singles 1, defeating F. Cerundolo (Argentina), ranked 31st, in straight sets 7-5, 6-3, giving Canada the first win. In singles 2, world No. 21 F. Auger-Aliassime (Canada) defeated world No. 26 S. Baez (Argentina) in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.
In doubles, V. Pospisil (Canada)/Shapovalov came from behind to lose to M. Gonzalez (Argentina)/A. Molteni (Argentina) 6-2, 3-6, 2-6, but Canada won their first match with a 2-1 record.
