A 58-year-old Canadian woman held the plank position for 4 hours and 30 minutes, setting a new female record for the longest plank hold.

According to Guinness World Records on the 3rd (local time), Donna Jean Wilde (58) from Canada recently broke the women’s record for holding a plank position for as long as 4 hours, 30 minutes and 11 seconds. This is 10 minutes longer than the previous women’s plank record, set by another Canadian, Dana Glowaka, in 2019.

A plank is an exercise where you lie face down with your elbows on the floor, raise your body so that it is in a straight line from your shoulders to your ankles, and then hold on. To be recognized as a Guinness record, the challenger’s entire body must maintain a straight line with all parts of the body except the arms and toes raised off the ground. Wilde’s record was measured under the watchful eye of an official Guinness official.

Wild said he started doing planks 12 years ago after a wrist injury prevented him from lifting weights and other machines. “I fell in love with the plank after realizing I could do other things, like read a book, while doing it,” says Wild. “I watched movies in the plank position and even studied for my master’s degree.”

Regarding his thoughts after completing the challenge, Wild said, “I felt like the first two hours went by quickly, but the next two hours were much harder,” adding, “The it was hardest to stay focused and maintain my posture during the last hour.” He added, “My elbow hurts a lot. I was worried that my posture would collapse. “I think my quadriceps (from my thighs) are also sore because I’m so tense,” he added. Wild said he focused all his energy on breathing and staying calm for the last 30 minutes.

Meanwhile, Josef Shalek, a man in his 50s from the Czech Republic, holds the highest record for holding a plank in the men’s category. Shalek achieved a new record of 9 hours, 38 minutes and 47 seconds in a hotel in Pilsen, Czech Republic in May last year.
