Several television series have faced the chopping block even ⁢after being⁤ greenlit for another season. Streaming services sometimes reverse renewal‍ decisions due to unforeseen circumstances.

Netflix’s teen drama,⁢ The Society, garnered critical acclaim upon its May 2019 debut. However, the streaming giant scrapped ⁣plans for⁢ a‍ second season in ⁢August 2020, citing production delays stemming from ‍the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’ve made the tough decision not⁢ to move forward with second seasons ‍of the‍ Society ‍ and I Am Not Okay With This,” Netflix announced. “We’re disappointed to have to⁢ make⁤ these decisions due to circumstances created by COVID.”

Kathryn Newton, who starred in The ⁣Society, had previously hinted at season 2 storylines. ⁢”People aren’t ready. I’m not even ready!” Newton told Us Weekly in January 2020, adding, “I really love [my character] Allie and I’m ⁤kind of influenced already by what I know so I can’t ⁣say,⁣ but‍ she’s ⁤been, like, the king‍ of this society and so ⁣heavy is the crown that bears the throne.”

Similarly, A League⁢ of Their Own, a Prime Video ⁤series that premiered in August 2022, was initially renewed for a shortened ‍final season ⁤in March 2023. ‍But Prime Video later reversed course, attributing the cancellation to production delays⁤ caused by the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Screen Actors Guild-American Federation‍ of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strikes.

Abbi Jacobson,a star of A League of Their Own,responded to the cancellation via Instagram in⁤ august 2023.”To blame this cancellation on the strike is bulls—t and timid,” she wrote.

What’s next

The entertainment industry continues to navigate production challenges, making TV show renewals less certain than ever. Fans are left wondering which of their favorite shows might be next.
