Captain Snot: A Lifelong Passion for Origami and Inspiring Creativity

In a time when there wasn’t as much to see and do as there is today, there was a person doing origami and crafts with children and ‘snot friends’.

Although 40 years have passed, it is said that Kim Young-man, who is still ‘Captain Snot,’ has written down what he wants to convey to children and to all adults who were once children.

Reporter Lim So-jeong came to meet us.

All you have to do is fold the colorful paper around, cut it into square pieces, glue them together, draw a face, and it’s done! He becomes a funny goblin.

“They are all moving things. There is a sound and something is crawling… .″

The teacher Kim Young-man, who gathered her ‘snotty’ friends in front of the television every morning.

″Hello friends? “My teacher and I are going to make a really fun helicopter today.”

A number of toys made from commonly available materials around us introduced children who were limited to drawing a two dimensional world to the world of three dimensional art.

″What about our friends, it’s so simple, isn’t it?″

For over 40 years, I’ve been bending, cutting, and making things with the hope that kids would have fun.

″Adults value results. It has to be completed before something happens, but the origami process is fun. The ‘push-ruck’ sound and then the smell and color of the paper, how pretty it is.”

Back then and even now, what the teacher wants to tell the kids is “play as much as you want.”

″(What I’m saying) is, “Have fun.” It covers everything from character development to physical, muscular and creative.”

He also asked him to be generous enough to give his space and his heart for the children.

″I don’t even like the term ‘no zone children.’ Do you think the children won’t be hurt when they go there and come back?”

I would like to convey my hope that the ‘boobs’ who are now adults and live busy daily lives can go back to the days when they found joy in 15cm x 15cm colored paper.

“When children apologize to their friends, they quickly hug them, smile brightly, and play together. I hope everyone will not forget that feeling and live like a child.”

This is Lim So-jeong from MBC News.
