A Step Toward Cleaner Voyages
Shipping accounts for nearly 3% of global emissions, but it’s notoriously tough to decarbonize.Current battery technology simply can’t provide enormous cargo vessels with enough power for long distances. nuclear propulsion has been considered, but it comes with risks adn remains controversial.
Most experts agree that the best bet is alternative, zero-emission fuels, such as hydrogen and ammonia. However, these are still in the early stages of advancement and require the construction of entirely new ships.
This is where Seabound’s innovative technology could offer a crucial interim solution. It aims to curb emissions from shipping while we await the development of more permanent fixes. As seabound’s CEO,Fredriksson, previously told TNW,”Alternative fuels for ships are at least 10 to 20 years away, but we need to start decarbonising today.”
Seabound’s Innovative approach
Seabound has developed a carbon capture system that can be retrofitted onto existing ships. This system captures CO2 directly from the exhaust fumes before it’s released into the atmosphere. The captured CO2 is then stored onboard in a liquid form, ready to be offloaded at port and potentially reused or stored safely.
This approach is especially notable because it doesn’t require a complete overhaul of the global shipping fleet. Instead, it offers a practical way to reduce the carbon footprint of the vast number of ships already in operation.
Real-World Trials and Future Ambitions
Seabound has already successfully trialled its technology with major shipping firms, including Hapag-Lloyd and Lomar Shipping. These trials have demonstrated the system’s effectiveness and feasibility in real-world maritime conditions. The company is now focused on scaling up its operations. Their ambitious goal is to capture 100 million tonnes of CO2 per year by 2040, which would represent a significant 10% of the shipping sector’s total emissions. This latest project, their first commercial endeavor, received co-funding from the EU’s Eurostars startup program and support from the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute. This backing highlights the growing recognition and investment in solutions that can address the urgent need for decarbonization in the shipping industry.
By providing a tangible and scalable solution for existing vessels, Seabound is paving the way for a cleaner future for global trade and travel.
