CARPENTRAS, France (April 1, 2025) – The Carpentras association for volunteer blood donation (ADSB) convened a meeting March 22 at the Château de la Roseraie to discuss current challenges and future strategies for blood and plasma donation.
Alain Scheiwe, president of the ADSB, presided over the meeting of 10 members. Discussions centered on reversing a recent downward trend in donation frequency.
“The rate of collection participation has decreased compared to previous years,” Scheiwe said. “Fortunately, the efforts of volunteers and EFS staff have allowed us to accept spontaneous donors.” He noted that only 2% of Carpentras residents of giving age are actively donating.
Push for Flexibility to Increase Spontaneous Blood Donations
Hervé Queta, president of the departmental union 84, addressed the challenges faced by spontaneous donors. Queta, who maintains close ties with the EFS (Établissement Français du Sang), advocated for greater flexibility in accommodating walk-in donors during collection events.
“I raised the issue,” Queta stated, emphasizing the need for adjustments to better serve those who donate without prior appointments. He also highlighted FranceS goal of health sovereignty, noting the importance of plasma donations.
Queta said a key objective for EFS in its 2024-2026 plan is to collect 1.4 million liters of plasma to supply French biotechnology laboratories for the production of plasma-derived drugs. He urged associations to increase communication efforts to promote plasma donation.
The departmental level saw 9,445 plasma samples collected in 2024, an increase of 1,563 from 2023. Carpentras, with 19 donors, is reportedly well-positioned in this effort.
ADSB Plans 12 Blood Drives in 2025
The ADSB has scheduled 12 blood drives for 2025, in addition to collections held at local schools. The association will also participate in the association forum in September, as well as departmental and regional congresses. Members plan to be present at the Viafefsta in June and the Ventouxman triathlon in september to raise awareness.
Additionally, plans are underway to relocate the blood donation stele, which was previously located at the destroyed friendship roundabout, to a safer location within the city.
Scheiwe announced he will step down from his volunteer role next summer, citing personal reasons.
