Apple CarPlay to Support AirPlay Video Streaming in iOS 26
Updated june 12, 2025
Apple is set to introduce AirPlay video support to CarPlay with the upcoming iOS 26 update. This enhancement will enable users to stream video from their iPhones to their vehicle’s center display while the car is parked, expanding in-car entertainment options.
The capability, highlighted on Apple’s developer site, requires automakers to integrate CarPlay with AirPlay video. Apple is encouraging automakers and developers to join its MFi Program to support this and othre features like CarPlay Ultra and car keys.
Adoption may be gradual, as automakers tend to be cautious about technologies that could distract drivers. Assurances that video playback is restricted to when the vehicle is stationary are likely a key consideration. Concerns about ceding too much control of in-car screens to Apple also play a role, as seen with the limited support for CarPlay Ultra.
Apple says that automakers will need to add support for CarPlay with AirPlay video, so it won’t be available to everyone right away.
Manny vehicles, particularly electric vehicles, already offer video streaming or gaming features when parked. Some manufacturers with Google’s Android-based systems have integrated native YouTube apps. Tesla’s theater mode includes Netflix, Hulu and YouTube. Other automakers provide video streaming on passenger or seatback screens.
Unofficial methods to enable video playback on CarPlay have previously existed through third-party adapters or jailbreak tweaks.
What’s next
The rollout of CarPlay with AirPlay video will depend on automaker adoption and integration efforts. Further details on hardware requirements and specific automaker support are expected as iOS 26 approaches its release.
