DRESDEN, Germany – The “Cat Q-a quantum adventure” escape room, a project of the Würzburg-dresden Excellence Cluster Ct.Qmat and the Technical Collections Dresden, marked its first anniversary in April 2024. Museum Director Roland Schwarz noted the popularity of the quantum-themed attraction, stating that nearly 6,000 visitors, notably school groups and families, have engaged with the puzzles centered around a half-dead cat and quantum physics concepts.
Matthias Vojta, professor of theoretical solid-state physics at TU Dresden and Dresden spokesman for the Cluster of Excellence Ct.Qmat, expressed satisfaction with the project’s success in sparking interest in physics among young people and the broader scientific community.
“Kittytoks” and enhanced Experience
To commemorate its first year, “Cat Q” has released 17 short films called “Kittytoks.” These videos feature musician Lea Köhler, the voice of the escape room, providing detailed explanations of the puzzles. Accessible via QR codes after the escape room experience, the “Kittytoks” complement the “Kittypedia to go,” a resource offering background knowledge, and the “fast quantum petting” feature on the escape room’s website.
Mission 2.0: A Revamped Challenge
Game designer Philipp stollenmayer has introduced enhancements to the “Cat Q” experience. “After a grate first year we thought to work out the tension between ‘cat Q’ in the escape room even more intensely. We focused more on teamwork and strengthened the challenge character.I am curious how the revised mission is received by the children and adolescents,” Stollenmayer said.
The updated version incorporates a scoring system where each solved puzzle contributes to a group score. lights indicate successfully completed puzzles after each room, and the number of lights determines the final outcome. A new floor graphic featuring a cat icon serves as a constant reminder of the mission, and a countdown timer, voiced by German comedian olaf Schubert in the German version, provides teams with time management guidance.
