Puglia Region’s Public Health Victory: Court Ruling Ends Dispute Over Ceglie Messapica Rehabilitation Center
CEGLIE MOSTICO, Italy (AP) — A recent ruling by the TAR of Lecce has concluded a protracted dispute regarding the management of the Rehabilitation center of Ceglie Messapica, affirming the legitimacy of the transition to public management by the Puglia Region and the ASL of Brindisi.
Union Applauds Ruling, Urges Action on Worker Stabilization
The decision has been met with approval from the CISL FP Taranto Brindisi, a local labor union, which is now calling for concrete action to secure the employment of the center’s workers.
Giuseppe Lacorte, general secretary of CISL FP Taranto Brindisi, stated, “It is a victory of good politics and good unionism. Though, it is indeed now imperative to move beyond rhetoric and take decisive steps. Stabilizing the workforce is both a moral and institutional obligation.”
Staff Stabilization Remains Key Concern
While the union acknowledges positive organizational developments, such as the conversion of the day hospital into a day service and broadened access to care, the stabilization of personnel remains a critical unresolved issue.
Lacorte emphasized the need for consistency, stating,”There was considerable discussion about the workers when there was a victory to celebrate, but now that it is time to honor commitments, there is a noticeable silence. We cannot establish a center of excellence on the foundation of precarious employment.”
Call for Action and Recognition of Workers’ Contributions
The CISL underscored the vital role the workers played in ensuring continuity of care, even during periods of significant uncertainty. The union is now urging those who have made pledges to translate them into tangible measures.
“The time for mere words is over,” Lacorte asserted. “If public health has genuinely prevailed, then that victory must be demonstrated by respecting those who sustain it every day.”
