⁣ Updated June 08, 2025

R. Kelly, once⁣ celebrated as the King of R&B and ⁤a best-selling music artist‍ with over 75 million records sold, is now serving a 31-year prison sentence. His career, highlighted by hits like “I Believe I Can Fly” and “Ignition⁣ (Remix),” took a dark turn amid persistent allegations of sexual abuse and exploitation.

The controversy began early in his career. In 1994, Kelly, then 27, married his protege Aaliyah, who was 15. The marriage was ‍later annulled.‍ Two years later, a civil suit alleged Kelly had a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old; the case was settled out of court. In 2000,Chicago⁤ police investigated allegations of sexual activity with a minor, but the case was dropped due to lack of cooperation.

In 2002, a video surfaced purportedly showing Kelly engaging in sex acts with an‍ underage girl. This led to 21⁢ counts of child sexual abuse images⁣ charges. Additional charges followed in Florida, but those were dismissed due to⁤ lack of probable cause. A 2008⁢ trial in Chicago ended in acquittal because the girl’s age in the⁢ video could not be proven.

The #MeToo era brought⁣ renewed scrutiny. In 2017, reports surfaced claiming Kelly was holding women against their will in a ⁢”cult.” The 2019⁣ Lifetime documentary, Surviving R. Kelly, further amplified the allegations. Chicago authorities later charged him with 10 counts of aggravated‍ criminal sexual abuse,⁤ and federal indictments followed.

The legal reckoning culminated in 2022 with convictions in both federal trials. Kelly is currently incarcerated at⁢ FCI Butner Medium I in North Carolina and will not be eligible for parole until 2047.

What’s next

R. Kelly remains in federal ‍prison, with his earliest possible parole date more than two decades away. The legal ⁣repercussions of his actions⁤ continue to unfold, impacting his legacy and the broader conversation around sexual abuse in the entertainment industry.
