jayapura, Papua – The Central Papua provincial government is actively pursuing the establishment of a public university within the province, a move designed to dramatically improve access to higher education for local communities and foster regional advancement. The initiative underscores a commitment to leveraging education as a primary driver of progress and empowerment in the newly formed province.
Addressing Educational Disparities in Central Papua
Central Papua, established as a separate province to bring public services closer to its people, faces important challenges in providing equitable access to higher education. Currently, residents frequently enough must travel long distances and incur substantial costs to pursue university-level studies outside the region. The new public university aims to eliminate these barriers, particularly for students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
Governor Meki Fritz Nawipa emphasized the importance of this project, stating, “This is our commitment, and the development of a public university in Central Papua will be based on local wisdom values.” The university will not only provide affordable educational opportunities but will also serve as a vital center for preserving and promoting the unique cultural heritage of the region.

The planned university will distinguish itself by integrating local wisdom into its curriculum and research initiatives. this approach aims to ensure that education is relevant to the specific needs and context of Central Papua, fostering a sense of ownership and pride among students and the wider community.
Acting Head of the Central Papua Education and Culture Office, Nurhaidah, explained that the university is a core component of the provincial government’s vision for a brighter future. “Central Papua was born out of the spirit of autonomy and the desire to bring public services closer to the people, so the public university can be established,” she said.
Roadmap to Implementation: Workshop and Master Plan
A crucial step in realizing this aspiring project took place on July 30, 2025, with a seminar and workshop held in Nabire.This event brought together key stakeholders to develop a comprehensive master plan for higher education development in Central Papua.The master document compiled during the workshop will serve as the blueprint for the university’s establishment, outlining its academic programs, infrastructure requirements, and long-term sustainability strategies. The government is prioritizing a phased approach to development, ensuring that the university is built on a solid foundation and can effectively meet the evolving needs of the province.
