“It’s always a battle, the federal derby is never easy,” says Josef Rýpar, one of the Czech Republic’s top scorers with five goals in the tournament.
The Czech-Slovak rivalry extends across all sports, but in floorball, the connection runs even deeper. Slovakia’s bench is led by coach Radomír Mrázek, a familiar face in Czech floorball circles. Mrázek, a four-time Czech Coach of the Year, previously guided the Vítkovice club to success.
“He’s done a tremendous job with the team since taking over,” Rýpar acknowledges. “They have a very strong top line, a unit from Bohemians, and a quality goaltender in Adam kohút,” he adds.Adding to the intrigue, Karel Ševčík, another Czech, serves as Mrázek’s assistant coach. Thirteen Slovak players currently compete in the Czech Superleague, further highlighting the intertwined nature of the two nations’ floorball scenes.
Slovakia’s star player, Martin Dudovič, is a familiar face in Malmö, having made the city his home base for his floorball career.
The Czech Republic, the reigning vice-champions, are looking to make a strong run at the title. They face a tough challenge in Group A, wich includes Switzerland, Norway, and Germany.Slovakia, meanwhile, finished last in their group, falling to Latvia, Sweden, and Finland.
Despite the results, Rýpar remains confident. “we have the quality on our side,” he says. “And the fact that Slovakia played a tough group beforehand might work in our favor.”
The stage is set for a thrilling encounter between two nations with a shared history and a fierce competitive spirit.

Czech Republic and Slovakia Face Off in World Floorball Championship Quarterfinal
Malmö, Sweden – The Czech Republic and Slovakia will clash in a highly anticipated quarterfinal matchup at the 2024 World Floorball Championships. The game, scheduled for Friday, pits two familiar foes against each other in a battle for a spot in the semifinals.
The Czechs, who enjoyed a rest day on wednesday, are looking to build on their strong performance in the group stage. Slovakia, meanwhile, secured their quarterfinal berth with a convincing 9-5 victory over Estonia in the playoff round.
This matchup carries extra weight due to the teams’ history. They met in the same stage of the tournament two years ago in Zurich, with the Czech Republic emerging victorious in a 9-4 rout.
