Chair Yoga: Gentle Exercises for Seniors’ Flexibility and Balance
Updated June 18, 2025
Chair yoga offers seniors a gentle yet effective method to enhance their flexibility, balance, and overall well-being. These modified yoga poses provide a safe and accessible way to stay active, even with limited mobility.
Start with torso circles to warm up the spine. While seated, move the upper body in circular motions, alternating directions to improve spinal flexibility.

Next, try hip walks. Shift weight from side to side, lifting each hip and inching it toward the back of the chair. Repeat this motion to move to the back, then reverse to the front. This exercise enhances hip mobility.

The seated tree pose promotes balance and focus.Place the left foot flat on the ground. Open the right leg to the side, resting the toes on the ground with the heel against the chair leg. Shift your weight toward the left leg.

For an added challenge, balance a block on your head while in the seated tree pose. Bring your palms together at heart center. If agreeable, extend your arms overhead while maintaining balance. Repeat on the opposite side.

Transition to mountain pose, standing behind the chair with feet hip-width apart. Use fingertips on the chair back for balance, if needed. Focus on breathing and alignment.

Release your arms to your sides, palms forward. Soften your knees, lengthen your spine, and take three deep breaths.

King Dancer pose can also be modified using a chair. Place your left hand on the chair back and shift weight to your left foot. Bend your right leg, lifting it and holding your ankle or foot with your right hand. Use a strap if needed.

Keep your left hand on the chair or extend your left arm forward. Release slowly and repeat on the other side.
Standing Locust pose is another beneficial exercise. Place both hands on the chair back. Reach your right leg behind you, pressing your toes into the floor and lifting your heel. Extend your left arm alongside your ear.

For a greater challenge, lift your right foot off the mat, balancing on your left leg. You can also hover your right hand over the chair back. Release and repeat on both sides.

Conclude with seated Savasana.Sit in the chair, place your hands in your lap or on your thighs, and extend your feet slightly. Relax and breathe deeply.
