Challenges in the Russian Space Program
Recently, cosmonauts on the Russian side of the International Space Station (ISS) wore protective gear after noticing an unusual smell. NASA astronaut Don Pettit described the odor as similar to “spray paint.” NASA confirmed on Sunday that the crew was safe and working to open the hatch between the Poisk module and the Progress spacecraft.
The Poisk module has been attached to the ISS since 2009. It connects to one of the four docking ports on the Russian section of the station. The source of the odor from the Progress vehicle is still unclear. In the past, Russian spacecraft have experienced leaks in space. Most recently, in February 2023, a Progress vehicle lost pressure in its cooling system.
The Russian space agency, Roscosmos, faces many challenges. Financial and staffing issues have arisen due to the ongoing war in Ukraine. These problems have hindered its ability to transport people and supplies to the ISS in recent years.
