Chaos in the Classroom: Right-Wing Influencer Sparks Outrage at University of Brasília
A Youtuber makes a lot of money filming classes and disrespecting teachers and colleagues on the History course at UnB. His videos receive millions of views. As well as editing speeches to ridicule teachers, the influencer questions historical facts with far right revisionism. The YouTuber denies that racism exists in Brazil, but says he suffers prejudice because he is white. The University says it has opened an investigation
UnB will investigate abusive practices by YouTuber Wilker Leão The boy generates millions of views on social media by filming teachers and students during History classes.
In the images, it is possible to see teachers and colleagues openly, while the YouTuber satirizes them. The videos show Wilker laughing and talking about “left-wing bigotry.”
Colleagues and teachers report that the YouTuber’s videos are edited and the speeches are distorted. “It distorts the lines, edits the conversations and builds an unrealistic situation. He has openly said that he does this because it gives him more views.” The information comes from UOL.
“We have a person who is not here to study but to damage. Let’s talk about this clearly. We are not going to pretend. This situation cannot remain like this. We have a sub-celebrity from the far right who signed up at UnB to do this little show, in order to take advantage of us and finance it. The biggest disrespect. The man came to play horror”, said a teacher who was filmed during the class.
The YouTuber reports, without providing evidence, that public universities in Brazil are setting up “left-wing fraud”, including UnB. The academic interrupts classes to comment on human rights, racism, sex and other topics while filming the faces and voices of teachers and other students.
In one of the videos Leão states that he suffers “discrimination” after a teacher talks about the privileges of white people. Leão is a white man and he claims that black people themselves are racist and that the teacher “blames whiteness for the world’s problems”. “It wasn’t just black people who were enslaved. White people were also enslaved,” Leão said in a video. In another, he says there is a “leftist playbook and a victimization playbook” when dealing with racism in the classroom.
The YouTuber denies that racism exists in the structure of Brazilian society. Topics such as gender and police violence are also covered by the influencer.
A teacher at UnB even filed a police report for defamation. The teacher said in a statement that she was called “authoritative” and that videos of her classes had come to the attention of her minors, who faced “consecutive hateful comments” from the influencer’s follower base. The Civil Police of the Federal District reported that the “incident has been registered through the Electronic Police Station and forwarded to the 2nd PI, who is investigating what was reported”.
Teachers collected documents and are considering taking legal action in the case involving the YouTuber. The academic community signed a term prohibiting the use of their images in videos published by Leão However, the videos continue to be published. In parts, the identities of those present are preserved, but in certain cuts it is possible to see the faces of other students and a teacher.
UnB says it provides support to teachers and students. In addition, the university mentioned that “the student, as part of his teaching-learning process, can make private or personal use of the teaching material provided in the classroom. However, any modification, change or publication, without proper authorization, directly infringes the teacher’s copyright, violating its use for purposes other than the objective of the study”.
