Charli XCX’s Key Role in ‘Overcompensating’ Music

Charli XCX took on multiple roles for Prime Video’s “Overcompensating,” not only appearing on screen but also serving as executive producer and music producer. Her deep involvement shaped the musical landscape of the eight-part series.
Music supervisors Jen Malone and Nicole Weisberg highlighted Charli XCX’s contributions at a guild event.They noted that the singer’s presence simplified their work and facilitated music licensing from other artists.Weisberg said Charli XCX participated in spotting sessions, contributed to the composing team, and provided feedback on the score’s placement.
“Overcompensating,” created by Benito Skinner, centers on Benny (Skinner), a closeted college freshman. Music functions as a key element in the narrative. Charli XCX contributed 30 songs,including “Boom Clap” and “Girls Night Out.” Tracks like Lady Gaga’s “Edge of Glory,” Britney Spears’ “Lucky,” and Nicki Minaj’s “Superbass” are also woven into Benny’s story.
Weisberg explained that the music was largely integrated into the scripts from the outset, addressing essential musical moments early in production. Each episode is even named after a song. “Getting Benny everything he wanted was step one,” Weisberg said, emphasizing the emotional connection between the songs and Skinner’s experiences.
The first episode,titled “Lucky” after Spears’ song,held particular importance for Skinner’s narrative. Weisberg, who attended college around the same time as Skinner, understood the song’s importance to the college experience.
Malone said securing Charli XCX’s commitment early on proved beneficial. “We had the Charli card to play,” Malone said, explaining that her involvement helped move things along.

Episode 4, titled “Boom Clap,” features Grace’s excitement about working at a Charli XCX concert on campus.Weisberg praised Charli XCX and her team, noting that the episode was filmed during the singer’s Sweat tour. charli XCX reportedly performed her tour and filmed her scenes in a single 10-hour period while in Canada.
While most songs were easily secured, one presented a challenge. The series reveals that Benny’s sexual awakening occurs while watching Brendan Fraser in “George of the Jungle.” Malone said obtaining the rights for the music in that scene was difficult because one of the rights holders, who owned 50% of the master and 50% of the publishing, was someone she had to track down previously for “Euphoria.” Malone added that she primarily dealt with the 80-year-old rights holder’s daughter.
Malone concluded that, compared to other shows, securing music for “Overcompensating” was relatively easy.
