Charles Rangel, the “Lion of Lenox Avenue” and a ​towering figure‌ in ​New York politics, has died. The longtime Harlem congressman passed away ⁢Monday at the age of 94, surrounded by family, ⁤his family confirmed.

rangel represented New York’s congressional districts in Harlem for 46 years,from 1971⁣ to 2017. At ‍the time of his retirement, ​the charlie Rangel political powerhouse⁤ was the second-longest serving member of the House.

New ⁢York City ⁢Mayor Eric Adams mourned the loss of “a dear friend and exemplary ⁢model‌ of devotion and courage” in a‍ statement. He extended⁤ prayers ⁢to Rangel’s family, Harlem, and all who knew him, concluding, “Rest in power, my friend.”

Born ‌on June 11, 1930, Charles Bernard‍ Rangel‍ served⁢ in the U.S. Army from 1948 to 1952 after dropping ⁤out of high school. He was an artillery operations specialist in the Korean War.
