Charles Rangel, the “Lion of Lenox Avenue” and a towering figure in New York politics, has died. The longtime Harlem congressman passed away Monday at the age of 94, surrounded by family, his family confirmed.
rangel represented New York’s congressional districts in Harlem for 46 years,from 1971 to 2017. At the time of his retirement, the charlie Rangel political powerhouse was the second-longest serving member of the House.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams mourned the loss of “a dear friend and exemplary model of devotion and courage” in a statement. He extended prayers to Rangel’s family, Harlem, and all who knew him, concluding, “Rest in power, my friend.”
Born on June 11, 1930, Charles Bernard Rangel served in the U.S. Army from 1948 to 1952 after dropping out of high school. He was an artillery operations specialist in the Korean War.
