Joshua Cheptegei, the reigning double Olympic champion and world record holder, is set to headline the Lisburn Half Marathon. Race director James McIlroy described Cheptegei’s participation as the “culmination of a few years’ hard work.” McIlroy told BBC Sport NI that securing Cheptegei elevates what they believe is already the fastest race in the world.
McIlroy noted previous attempts to bring Cheptegei to the event were unsuccessful due to scheduling conflicts, including the Olympic Games. However, Cheptegei’s confirmation for the Amsterdam marathon paved the way for his appearance in Lisburn.
While McIlroy anticipates other prominent runners will join the race, he acknowledges Cheptegei will be the main attraction. He highlighted the unique combination of a high-profile runner on a scenic course. Cheptegei is bringing two pacemakers and intends to run a very fast time, according to McIlroy.
McIlroy added that Cheptegei’s participation places the Lisburn Half Marathon alongside major races like those in New York City and New Delhi, where Cheptegei has previously competed.
