Liberian President Joseph Boakai Arrives in Beijing for 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation Summit
At 7:20 am on September 4, Liberian President Joseph Boakai arrived in Beijing by plane to attend the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation Summit.
Liberia, located in western Africa, bordering the Atlantic Ocean to the southwest, has a tropical monsoon climate with an average annual temperature of about 25°C.
China-Liberia Cooperation Achievements
Mutually beneficial cooperation between China and Liberia has achieved remarkable results in various fields. China has assisted Liberia in the construction of several projects, including the Barrick Sugar Factory, Sports Complex, Tapeta Hospital, Ministry of Health Office Building, and Agricultural Technology Demonstration Center, benefiting the local community.
The two countries have also achieved fruitful cooperation in the maritime field. China has dispatched experts to implement technical cooperation in bamboo and rattan weaving, vegetable planting, and livestock breeding in Liberia, and assisted in the construction of agricultural technology demonstration centers. Chinese companies have invested in the mining sector to help Liberia turn its resource advantages into development results.
China and Liberia have signed a trade agreement with cash payment. In 2023, the bilateral trade volume between China and Liberia was US$9.92 billion, a year-on-year increase of 32%.
Cultural Exchanges and Cooperation
China and Liberia have close exchanges in the fields of culture, youth, health, and other areas. A cultural cooperation agreement has been signed, and art groups have frequently visited and performed. China has accepted Liberia scholarship students since 1986. In the 2022-2023 academic year, there were 1,134 Liberian students in China.
Health Cooperation
After the Ebola outbreak, China was the first to rush to Liberia to help, sending public health experts to train local medical staff, building an Ebola treatment center in Liberia, and sending hundreds of medical staff to participate in the management and operation of the center. After the World Health Organization announced the end of the Ebola epidemic in Liberia, China handed over the treatment center to Liberia.
China has sent medical teams to Liberia since July 1984, and has sent 16 batches of 159 people so far. Currently, China has 9 medical staff in Liberia.
