China and Iran Strengthen Bilateral Ties and Cooperation
St. Petersburg, Sept. 12, 2024 (Xinhua) – In a significant development, two senior officials of China and Iran have agreed to strengthen bilateral ties and implement various cooperation initiatives.
Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, met with Ali Ahmadian, the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran, on the sidelines of the BRICS Senior Security Officials meeting in St. Petersburg, Russia.
China’s Support for Iran
Regarding China-Iran relations, Wang emphasized China’s support for Iran’s efforts to safeguard its national sovereignty, security, and dignity. He also expressed China’s opposition to external interference and excessive repression against Iran, while reaffirming China’s commitment to the stable and sustainable development of bilateral relations with Iran.
Regional Cooperation and Development
Wang also highlighted China’s support for Iran and other countries in the region to resolve their disputes through communication and consultation. He emphasized the importance of continuously developing relations between countries in the region.
Iran’s Readiness for Cooperation
Ahmadian emphasized the readiness of the new Iranian government to work with China to implement the comprehensive cooperation plan between Iran and China. He expressed Iran’s desire to increase practical cooperation in economic and trade investment, digital technology, cultural tourism, and other areas.
Ahmadian also appreciated China’s successful mediation in conducting the Iran-Saudi dialogue in Beijing and confirmed China’s role as a major responsible country in the international community.
The Situation in Gaza
During their meeting, the two sides discussed the situation in Gaza and stressed the importance of resuming efforts for a permanent ceasefire and full military withdrawal. They also emphasized the need for a “two-state solution” as soon as possible.
