Chinese authorities have uncovered a Chinese national suspected of spying for the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Reuters reported.

The Ministry of State Security of China announced on the 11th that it had sent Zeng (52), a Chinese national, to the prosecution on charges of espionage through its official WeChat account.

Zeng, who worked for a Chinese defense company, became friendly with a CIA agent while he was dispatched to Italy for training. In particular, the relationship between the two became closer through dinner parties and opera viewings, and Zeng became mentally dependent on the CIA agent, according to Chinese authorities.

According to a statement released by the authorities, after CIA agents managed to sway Zeng’s political stance, he had him hand over classified information about the Chinese military. A specific time period was not disclosed.

Zeng signed an espionage contract with the US and received related training before returning to China. Born in 1971, Zeng’s gender was not disclosed. The alleged CIA agent’s name is said to be ‘Seth’. The CIA agent promised huge sums of money and the Zeng family’s immigration to the United States in return for handing over classified information, authorities said.
