China Breaks Ranks: The Surprising Reason Behind Its Support for Sudan Sanctions
China Urges Parties in Sudan Conflict to Prioritize National Interests
China has called on the parties involved in the Sudan conflict to put the interests of their country and people first, respect international humanitarian law, and provide maximum protection to civilians and civilian facilities without causing further damage.
According to China’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Dai Ping, renewing sanctions measures will help prevent the continued flow of illegal weapons into the battlefield and calm the situation on the ground. This statement was made during his speech explaining why China voted in favor of the draft resolution on sanctions against Sudan.
The United Nations Security Council has emphasized the need for more efforts to push all parties in Sudan towards dialogue to find a political solution to the current conflict. The conflict in Sudan has continued for over a year and a half with no signs of abating, resulting in a deteriorating humanitarian situation that has left millions of Sudanese civilians facing multiple challenges.
Dai Ping stressed that constructive and concrete measures must be taken to help Sudan stop hostilities and return to lasting peace. He added that sanctions are a means, not an end, and should not replace diplomacy.
