China Extends Hand of Friendship: A New Era of Cooperation with Togo Unfolds

The Chinese Embassy in Togo organized on the evening of September 26, 2024 in Lomé, a reception to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China. An opportunity for Chao Weidong, Chinese Ambassador to Togo, to reaffirm his country’s support for Togo. “A true friend is someone you share the journey with” before stating “China is willing to move forward alongside Togo on the path towards modernization, and to bring more tangible benefits to the population.

The founding of the People’s Republic of China is celebrating its 75th anniversary. In Lomé, the event is marked by a reception in the Embassy building where many guests had the opportunity to listen to an appropriate speech by the Chinese diplomat. Among the guests, we noted the presence of several personalities as well as those of the government. In a speech for the occasion, Chao Weidong, Chinese Ambassador to Togo, reaffirmed his country’s firm support to accompany Togo in order to implement the consensus of Xi Jinping and Faure Gnassingbé and the fruitful achievements of the Beijing summit.

“A true friend is someone you share the journey with”stated the Chinese ambassador to Togo in his speech before saying “ I would like to reaffirm that China is ready to move forward alongside Togo on the path towards modernization, and to bring more tangible benefits to the population.”

In Togo, China is present on several projects. Xi Jinping’s country announced a few days ago the construction of 300 boreholes in the Plateaux region. The work will start by December 30 with the aim of moving quickly to alleviate the lack of water during the upcoming dry season in this region. The drilling is distributed in 12 prefectures. A total of 285 villages in the region will benefit, benefiting 173,973 people.

In addition, a series of new collaboration projects are being prepared and then implemented, in the fields of infrastructure, connectivity, agriculture, trade, investment and especially in the social sector and the welfare of the population.

According to the Chinese diplomat in Togo, “these new projects will not be long, the China-Togo partnership will certainly experience a notable expansion and deepening.”

In his speech, Chao Weidong returned to the final FOCAC 2024 summit held in Beijing. During this summit, the Chinese president declared, “China intends to work with Africa to carry out ten Partnership Actions on modernization, with the intention of deepening Sino-African cooperation at various levels.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, a crucial year for the reform and modernization of the country. “Last July, the Communist Party of China held a conference of historical significance, with the adoption of systematic provisions on the continuous deepening of general reform and the promotion of modernization with Chinese characteristics,” the diplomat said in his speech. He assured the countries in the sense that China is keen to pursue its foreign policy of a community with a shared future for humanity, to remain attached to the common values of all humanity, to realize the 3 major initiatives: developing a global security initiative and the global civilization enterprise.

It should be noted that the trade volume between China and Togo over the period between January and July 2023 is $2.3 billion, up 14% compared to the same period last year.
