China, where the COVID-19 delta mutant virus is spreading, again tightens immigration control for domestic and foreign residents. It has decided to temporarily restrict the issuance of immigration documents unless it is an emergency. This is to fundamentally block the possibility of the virus entering overseas.

On the 4th, the Joint Quarantine Control Office of the State Council of China announced the emergency management policy for ports, airports and border areas, saying, “We are facing a serious situation in the prevention of COVID-19, which is transmitted from overseas to the mainland.”

First of all, the issuance of documents such as immigration certificates is restricted except for unavoidable reasons such as government affairs, corporations, or study abroad. In the case of ports, unnecessary personnel are also not permitted to board. “Except for emergency personnel, crossing the border will be strictly controlled,” said Liu Haitao, director of the National Immigration Bureau.

At the same time, airport staff are required to undergo nucleic acid testing every two days, and those working in ports are managed in a separate location. However, the policy is to ensure that there are no disruptions in logistics customs clearance.

The delta mutant virus, which recently originated in China, has spread throughout the country through overseas inflows from Nanjing and Shanghai International Airports, as well as Yunnan Province adjacent to Myanmar. In particular, the infection that started at Nanjing Airport on the 20th of last month has spread to 17 provinces in three weeks.

As of the 4th, China’s Health Commission announced that there were 85 new confirmed cases, including 62 from the mainland and 23 from overseas. Jiangsu Province had the most with 40, followed by Hunan and Shanghai with 9 each, and Beijing with 3, and the number of confirmed cases is still spreading. The health authorities have designated Nanjing, Zhengzhou, Yangzhou, and Zhangjiajie as high-risk areas and 154 as medium-risk areas. This is the highest number since January.

Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chunlan (孫春蘭) said, “We cannot delay the vigilance of even one second. It is necessary to protect the results obtained through control,” he said.
