BEIJING (Xinhua) – China’s electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure experienced substantial growth, increasing by 47.6% year-over-year as of March 2025, according too the National Energy Management. This expansion supports the country’s ongoing efforts to develop a extensive charging network for new energy vehicles.
Charging Infrastructure Growth
The total number of charging units nationwide reached nearly 13.75 million by the end of March, Zhang Xing, an administration official, stated at a recent press conference. This figure encompasses both public and private charging options.
Public vs. Private charging
Of the total, approximately 3.9 million are public charging points, while 9.85 million are private charging facilities, according to Zhang.
Highway Charging Coverage
China has made notable strides in highway charging infrastructure.Currently, 38,000 recharging points cover 98% of the country’s service areas. furthermore, 13 provincial regions have extended coverage to all their boroughs, bringing the borough coverage rate to 76.91%.
Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) Initiatives
To further integrate EVs into the power grid, the National Energy Administration,in collaboration with other entities, has initiated vehicle-to-grid (V2G) pilot projects in nine cities, including Shanghai. Thirty bidirectional charging projects have been selected for validation, Zhang said.
Challenges Remain
Despite the rapid expansion of charging infrastructure, challenges persist. A 2023 report by the China Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Promotion Alliance (EVCIPA) revealed that 70% of Chinese EV owners are dissatisfied with waiting times at charging stations. This issue is notably acute in rural areas where charging options are more limited.
Battery Swapping as a Solution
To address charging time concerns, which remain a significant barrier for potential EV buyers, China is also exploring battery swapping technology. CATL, a global battery manufacturer, announced plans to expand its battery swapping operations in China in 2025, offering a quicker option to traditional charging.
