GUIZHOU, China – The ⁤Huajiang Canyon Bridge, a ⁣suspension bridge in Guizhou province, is slated⁢ to open in June adn will become the world’s highest bridge,⁣ dwarfing even ⁤the One World Trade Center in New York City.

A Feat of Engineering

Soaring 2,051 feet above the canyon floor, the ⁢Huajiang ‍Canyon Bridge ‍surpasses the height of the One World Trade Center⁢ (1,776 feet) and several other global landmarks. It will also displace the Duge Bridge, also in China, as the world’s⁢ highest bridge. The Duge Bridge stands 1,854⁣ feet above the ground.

Construction of the $283 million‍ (U.S.) project began in 2022. Despite the challenges of building in a mountainous region, the bridge was completed ahead of schedule. Once open, the⁤ bridge will drastically reduce travel time across the canyon from over an hour to approximately three minutes.

Speed vs. Western Projects

Mamdouh El-Badry, a civil engineering professor at the University of Calgary, noted the rapid pace of construction compared to similar projects in the West. he told newsweek that projects outside of China can take up to a decade to complete.

In comparison, the Millau Bridge in France, one of the⁢ highest bridges in the world, was⁢ built ⁤about three years after more than one decade of planning‍ and approval. The Gordie Howe ⁤International Bridge, which connects Detroit to Windsor and is planned ⁤to open in the⁤ fall of 2025, will take ⁣more than seven years as the first stone laying.

China’s Bridge Dominance

China is home to a meaningful number of the world’s highest bridges. six of the highest bridges globally are located in China. By comparison, only three bridges in the⁢ United states are among the top 50 largest⁢ bridges worldwide.

The concentration of thes massive infrastructure projects in China, notably in the ⁢western and southwestern regions, is driven by the area’s mountainous terrain. Traditional roads are ⁢frequently enough impractical in areas like Guizhou, making bridges like the Huajiang Canyon Bridge⁤ essential for transportation.
