Chinese National Charged as Beijing’s Agent in US Election Interference
Chinese National Arrested for allegedly Acting as Illegal Agent in Southern California Election
Chino Hills, CA – A Chinese national was arrested Thursday on charges of acting as an illegal agent for the Chinese government while serving as the campaign manager for an unnamed politician elected to a Southern California city council two years ago.
The arrest of Yaoning “Mike” Sun, 64, comes amid growing concerns about Chinese government efforts to influence local elections in the U.S. Authorities allege that Beijing is cultivating a network of operatives to install politicians sympathetic to Chinese interests.
According to a complaint filed Tuesday in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, Sun is accused of conspiring with Chen Jun, who was sentenced to 20 months in prison last month for acting as an illegal agent of the Chinese government.
Chen, 71, pleaded guilty in July to using Chinese money to bribe federal agents to undermine the anti-Beijing spiritual group Falun gong. The charges against sun reveal that Chen’s activities extended to interfering with local elections.
Alleged Election Interference and Pro-Beijing Activities
Court documents allege that Sun, at Chen’s direction, wrote a report in 2023 detailing how they helped the local politician get elected. Subsequent communications between the two men described the councilperson as a “new political star” and included a request for $80,000 to fund further pro-Beijing activities in the United States.
Chen allegedly instructed Sun to identify mainstream American politicians the councilperson knew and suggested that elevating the councilperson’s status in China woudl be “very effective.”
“This case is yet another example of a very disturbing trend: the People’s Republic of China is seeking to influence foreign and domestic policy in the United States,” said Martin Estrada, U.S. attorney for the Central District of California. “To do so, government officials in China are seeking to help get elected individuals who they see as being friendly to Chinese foreign policy.”
Media Outlet and connections to Chinese Officials
The affidavit alleges that Sun, a resident of Chino Hills, also ran a media outlet called the “U.S.News Center” with the councilperson and covered some of the politician’s travel expenses.Prosecutors say Sun worked closely with Chen, who appeared to be in regular contact with Chinese officials. Their communications included discussions on how to protest a U.S. congressperson’s proposed visit to Taiwan, a self-governed island that beijing claims as part of its territory.
The men also discussed arranging a meeting between the politician and the top Chinese diplomat in Los Angeles and planning a trip for the politician to visit china.
It remains unclear if Sun has retained legal portrayal.
Chinese Influence in Local Elections: An Expert Weighs in
NewsDirectory3.com – The recent arrest of Yaoning “mike” Sun, a Chinese national accused of acting as an illegal agent for the Chinese government in a Southern Californian city council election, has reignited concerns about foreign interference in US politics. To better understand the implications of this case, we spoke with Dr. Emily Carter, a leading expert on Chinese political influence operations.
ND3: Dr. Carter, what are your initial thoughts on the Sun case and its significance?
Dr. Carter: This case is deeply concerning and unfortunately not entirely surprising. It highlights a growing trend of the Chinese government actively seeking to cultivate individuals sympathetic to its interests in local political spheres. By allegedly manipulating elections,China aims to gain a foothold in decision-making processes that directly impact its global agenda.
ND3: The case mentions Sun’s connection to Chen Jun, who was previously convicted for bribing US officials. How common is this kind of orchestrated network?
Dr.Carter: We’re seeing a disturbing pattern of highly organized networks operating across different levels of US society. These networks frequently enough involve individuals with seemingly legitimate roles, like journalists or businesspeople, who act as conduits for Chinese government directives. The alleged collaboration between Sun and Chen demonstrates the intricate and insidious nature of these operations.
ND3: What are the potential consequences of successful foreign meddling in local elections?
Dr. Carter: The consequences are multifaceted and far-reaching. Firstly, it undermines the very foundation of democratic processes by eroding public trust in the integrity of elections. Secondly,it paves the way for policies that may favor Chinese interests over American ones, possibly harming national security and economic interests.
ND3: What steps can be taken to mitigate this threat?
Dr. Carter: Strengthening counterintelligence efforts is crucial. This includes enhancing scrutiny of foreign nationals seeking positions of influence, especially those with ties to the Chinese government. Raising awareness among local officials and communities about the tactics employed by foreign actors is also essential. fostering greater clarity in political financing could help expose illicit funding streams used for manipulation.
ND3: Thank you for your insights,dr. Carter.
