Mobile security firm lookout has identified a new system employed by Chinese law enforcement to extract data from confiscated mobile devices. The software, dubbed “Massistant,” is developed by Chinese company Xiamen Meiya Pico and represents a notable advancement in digital surveillance capabilities. Massistant specializes in the comprehensive extraction of various data types, including private communications, multimedia files, geographical tracking records, voice recordings, and contact databases. Notably, it can even access messages from encrypted applications like Signal, posing a considerable concern for user privacy.
Expert Insights and User Awareness
Kristina Balaam, the researcher at Lookout who conducted the malware analysis, emphasized the gravity of this discovery. “It’s a big concern,” Balaam stated. “I think anybody who’s traveling in the region needs to be aware that the device that they bring into the country could very well be confiscated and anything that’s on it might very well be collected.” Her research uncovered multiple posts on Chinese online forums where individuals reported finding Massistant installed on their devices following interactions with the police.Balaam observed, “It seems to be pretty broadly used, especially from what I’ve seen in the rumblings on these Chinese forums.”
How Massistant Operates and Legal Frameworks

While Massistant does leave traces of its installation on seized devices, perhaps allowing for detection and removal through manual inspection or tools like Android Debug Bridge, Balaam cautioned that by the time the software is installed, authorities have already gained access to the user’s data. She further elaborated that Massistant is indicative of a larger trend, describing it as one component within a “big ecosystem” of spyware and malware developed by chinese surveillance technology companies. This underscores the pervasive nature of digital surveillance in the region and the importance of user awareness regarding device security when traveling.
