[천지일보=정다준 기자] The wind of generational change is blowing in Naver. Choi Su-yeon, who was born in 1981, was selected as the next CEO (CEO), the senior leader of the Global Business Support Department.

Naver held a regular board of directors meeting on the 17th and announced that it had approved Choi Soo-yeon (40), who is responsible for global business support, as the nominee for the CEO. In addition, Kim Nam-sun, who was born in 1978, was appointed as the chief financial officer (CFO), who is responsible for business development, investment, and mergers and acquisitions (M&A). They will be finally appointed after approval of the general shareholders’ meeting held in March next year and a resolution of the board of directors.

It is evaluated that Naver’s personnel management is the most unconventional since its foundation in 1999.

This means that a 40-year-old female talent will lead Korea’s largest internet company with annual sales of over 5 trillion won.

Nominee Soo-yeon Choi completed a BS in Civil Engineering from Seoul National University, a MS from Yonsei University’s Law School, and a LL.M from Harvard Law School. After joining Naver (then NHN) in 2005, he worked for four years in the communications and marketing organization. He mainly dealt with corporate M&A and corporate law. After graduating from Harvard Law School (LLM), he joined Naver again in November 2019. In March of last year, he was appointed as a non-registered executive of Naver and became a hot topic.

Regarding the background of this personnel appointment, the Board of Directors said, “The Board of Directors highly appreciated the problem-solving ability that has been shown by supporting various domestic and foreign businesses in the past, as well as the broad understanding of the company’s global strategy and the relevant market.” “I decided that he was a candidate who could make regular changes while maintaining a balanced view from inside and outside.”

Kim Nam-sun, CFO-nominated CFO, graduated from Seoul National University College of Engineering and Harvard Law School, and worked as a lawyer at US law firms Craves, Swain & Moore for over two years. After that, he turned into a financial expert and worked for Lazard, Morgan Stanley, and Macquarie, global investment companies for 10 years, making his name known in the industry as an M&A expert. He joined Naver in August of last year and led big deals such as the acquisition of Whatpad and the exchange of shares in E-Mart and Shinsegae.

The board’s clarification is that the nominee Kim determined that he was the right person to strengthen the global management system and further strengthen Naver’s corporate competitiveness in the global market.

Meanwhile, the current Naver CEO Han Seong-suk (54) became the first female CEO in March 2017 and succeeded in reappointing in March last year in recognition of his management performance.
