Sudan’s Cholera Epidemic Claims 235 Lives Amid Ongoing Conflict
The Ministry of Health of Sudan has reported a significant rise in the number of deaths due to the cholera epidemic, with the latest figures standing at 235 cases.
A recent statement from the ministry revealed that 361 new cases of cholera have been recorded, including 7 deaths in the provinces of Kassala, Gedaref, and the Nile.
This update comes just days after Sudan Health announced that the number of deaths due to the cholera epidemic had risen to 185 cases on Sunday.
The Sudanese authorities declared cholera an epidemic in the country on August 12, amidst an ongoing war between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Aid Forces that has been raging since mid-April 2023.
The conflict has resulted in devastating consequences, with around 18,800 people dead and nearly 10 million displaced or injured, according to the United Nations.
The humanitarian crisis in Sudan has sparked international calls for action, with the UN and other organizations urging for assistance to save millions from starvation and death due to food shortages.
The fighting has spread to 13 states, exacerbating the already dire situation and highlighting the need for immediate intervention.
