[OSEN=인천, 길준영 기자] Baseball professional SSG Landers Choo Shin-soo (42) shared his thoughts on ABS (Automatic Ball Award System).

Choo Shin-soo started as the number 2 designated hitter in the game against KT Wiz in the ‘2024 Shinhan Bank SOL Bank KBO League’ held at SSG Landers Field in Incheon on the 26th and performed well with 3 hits in 4 at-bats , 1 home run, 2 RBI, and 1 run. He hit his first home run this season and reached 50 home runs in the KBO League.

In an interview after the game, Choo Shin-soo said, “In a way, it’s embarrassing for me to be asked about my first home run like this. This means it’s not the first time he’s hit a home run, but the home run came late. “I always try to help the team, but these days it’s been so bad that I’m thinking about making changes in different directions,” he said of his first home run.

This season, the KBO League became the first major professional baseball league in the world to introduce ABS. Fans respond very positively as consistent strike/ball decisions become possible, but players with first-hand experience with ABS seem to have difficulty adjusting because the strike/ball decisions feel different from the previous ones.

In the match on this day, Hwang Jae-gyun was forced to leave after protesting the ABS decision. Hwang Jae-gyun faced SSG left-handed starting pitcher Oh Won-seok in his second inning in the top of the 4th inning with 2 outs and 1 base on base. Hwang Jae-gyun, who was in a disadvantageous ball count with 1 ball and 2 strokes, was watching Oh Won-seok’s fourth pitch, a low fastball towards the body at 146 km/h. It may not have been the course and type of pitch that catcher Lee Ji-young had requested, but Lee Ji-young failed to catch the ball properly and dropped it backwards, and first base runner Sang- Moon sang at the same time as the pitch and landed on second base.

However, referee Lee Gye-seong awarded a shot based on an ABS (Automatic Ball Award System) decision, and Hwang Jae-gyun was knocked out. Hwang Jae-gyun, who watched the ball behind her and saw the umpire’s hit and a strikeout call, could not control his anger and threw his helmet, and umpire Kye-seong Lee ordered him to leave immediately. With Hwang Jae-gyun’s shot out and out, KT’s fourth attack ended. This is the third ejection this season and the player’s first.

Choo Shin-soo, struggling with a .1.94 batting average in 13 games this season (7 hits in 36 at-bats), 1 home run, 5 RBI, 5 runs, and 3 stolen bases with OPS of .645 , about ABS, “I am not opposed to changes in Korean baseball.” He expressed his honest feelings, saying, “I feel that everything I have done and established so far is becoming meaningless.”

Choo Shin-soo said, “The starting plan of the strike zone is not to pick balls that are completely out of the zone, but to pick balls that are missing from one to half of the balls. Now it feels like that is gone. It’s something players have to deal with, but it’s not easy. “My eyes and my body are used to the strike zone so far, but it changes in an instant, so I think it’s too late to adjust to the new strike zone,” he said.

Choo Shin-soo, who expressed regret about the sudden introduction of ABS, said, “I wonder if the players have really had enough time to adapt,” he said, “I am in favor of changes such as increasing the size of the base and introducing a pitch clock. It’s OK to play baseball for the fans. “I understand 100% about introducing ABS, but I regret there was enough communication with the players and time for them to adjust,” he said. co. kr
