For Christoph Schmidt,35,life took an unexpected turn after contracting
COVID-19.I wouldn’t wish this on my worst enemy,
he says, describing
teh profound impact the illness has had on his daily existence.

Since his COVID-19 diagnosis, Schmidt has struggled with persistent fatigue.
I’m tired and exhausted all day,
he explains. Regardless of his
sleep schedule,he finds himself unable to shake the exhaustion.
I can’t do anything about it.
He might wake up at 7 a.m. only to
find himself back on the couch within half an hour.
If things go well, I sleep until 12 or 4 p.m.,
he says.
If things go badly, even longer – and that was my day.
A Sleep resembling a Coma
Schmidt’s sleep is far from restful; he describes it as a coma-like state.
I’m fully knocked out,
he says. If I have put myself, what wants to happen – I just don’t get awake.
Loud noises and even his partner’s epilepsy assistance dog are unable to
rouse him. The dog can basically run over me…
He simply continues
to sleep.
it took two and a half years to identify the underlying cause of his
symptoms. In November last year I was in rehab for three weeks.
During his time at the clinic, a senior doctor presented him with a therapy
plan. Schmidt expressed his uncertainty about being able to adhere to the
schedule, prompting the doctor to inquire further. I explained to him what complaints I have and then he gave me a test sheet that I should fill out.
Upon the doctor’s return, he suggested that Schmidt likely had chronic
fatigue syndrome (CFS).
The Complexities of chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Chronic fatigue syndrome, also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), is a
serious condition that significantly impacts quality of life. Often
triggered by a viral infection, key symptoms include severe exhaustion,
concentration and sleep disturbances, and physical ailments such as neck,
muscle, and headaches. Currently, medical professionals can only manage the
symptoms, as there is no known cure.

Outings have become infrequent. Schmidt feels most secure at home or with
family.
Along with extreme fatigue, Schmidt experiences other symptoms, including
bouts of feeling unwell or dizzy without a clear cause. He also reports
cold-like symptoms such as headaches and a stuffy nose. Sometiems I feel really cured, as with a flu,
he says.
Without having a cold.
These symptoms are attributed to CFS.
Daily Life Disrupted
CFS has significantly altered Schmidt’s daily routine. My appointments have to be clocked in such a way that I am back home as quickly as possible – I feel safe there,
he says.
Such as, if I have a hairdresser appointment at 11 a.m., I will start at 10:30 a.m.-and then I promptly go home because I get tired or get sick.
He now relies on online shopping or assistance from neighbors and family for
groceries. His ability to work has also been affected. In rehab, it was found that I am working for a maximum of two hours - if at all.
Schmidt faces constant misconceptions about his condition. He was just lazy,I don’t feel like… - with prejudices like this he is always confronted.
It is not nice to be stamped like this,
he says. Make yourself in my situation,
he replies. I’m not doing it on purpose.
Financial and Emotional Challenges
Schmidt and his family also face challenges navigating bureaucratic processes.
He is currently awaiting decisions regarding financial assistance, including
disability benefits and pension approval. I need the money to pay bills to have food in the fridge to just be able to live a little,
he says.
Schmidt holds little hope for a cure. I just hope that it won’t get worse rapidly.
He wouldn’t wish this illness on anyone. When I think about what I used to do … – now I’m almost nothing more.
Having lived in Bochum for several years, he used to enjoy exploring the
city. Today the many people annoy me, thay are just too loud for me.
A normal life feels like a distant memory. What should I do?
He flinches with the armpits.
When I’m tired, I lie down – but whether such a fulfilling life looks …
Schmidt breathes deeply.
I don’t know – just ran.
