Rep. Choo Kyung-ho (third term, Daegu) was appointed as the new party leader to lead the People Power Party, which was in crisis after its crushing defeat in the April 10 general election. Given that he is a former administrative bureaucrat and an “economics expert,” there are high expectations that he will be able to guide party policies and innovation related to the mountain of people’s livelihood problems.

On the afternoon of the 9th, the People Power Party held a general meeting of elected candidates to elect the party leader at the National Assembly main building in Yeouido, Seoul. On this day, the general meeting of elected candidates consisted of a joint debate, voting for the leader of the hall and counting of votes. After a total of 102 votes, Representative Chu received 70 votes. Rep. Lee Jong-bae, who competed, received 21 votes, and Rep. Song Seok-jun received 11 votes. There were no invalid votes or abstentions.

Congressman Chu, who confirmed his election after more than an hour of intense discussion and voting, smiled brightly. Previously, there were analyzes within and outside the party that he was likely to be the leader of the next plan, but Congressman Chu seemed to have kept all possibilities in mind. During the discussion before the vote, there were moments when people seemed a little nervous and their voices were shaking.

Congressman Chu said, “You have given much support to those in need in this difficult time,” and added, “(The People Power Party) must become a competent party for people’s livelihood and a political party.” He continued: “It may seem easy, but it is a very difficult task. “It is a task that I cannot do alone,” he said, adding: “I think it will be possible when the 108 members of the National Assembly join us.”

He continued: “108 people join and we go. So, I think we can safely contest the (opposition’s) 192 seats in anything,” he said “We are elite agents who survived the last really ferocious elections. “We must not forget this fact and engage in legislative activities,” she added.

Of the candidates who ran together, he said: “I ran this race with a senior parliamentary colleague with whom I have always been very close and have spoken openly about the future of the party. He added: “You two will always remain their words in mind and together we will make our party healthier and stronger.” “I will work with you to make it more powerful one day,” he said.

Meanwhile, former party leader Yoon Jae-ok, who led the party for about 13 months since April last year, said in a greeting before the general meeting of elected candidates: “We really need to change and innovate in response to the people’s whip during elections and show what a living political party looks like by listening to people’s voices and taking action,” he said.

Emergency Response Committee Chairman Hwang Woo-yeo, who took the podium after former floor leader Yoon, said: “The crown jewel of a legislator is the floor leader. “Being elected leader literally means becoming a member of the National Assembly,” he said, adding: “I hope we will join forces with the determination that the leader’s success will be the success of all of us. “

Representative Chu, who was elected leader on this day, was born in Daegu in 1960. He graduated from Kyeseong High School and Korea University with a degree in business administration, then earned a master’s degree in economics from the University of Oregon. . He entered public service after passing the 25th civil service exam and was the first deputy prime minister of economy and minister of strategy and finance under the Yoon Seok-yeol government.

Although he is considered an economic expert, he is also often described by ministries as a “man of integrity”. In 2005, when he was head of the banking department of the Ministry of Finance and Economy, he was selected as the “boss I want to emulate”. Last year, when he was Minister of Strategy and Finance, he was chosen by Ministry employees as the “boss they want to emulate”.

Given that the vertical relationship between party and government has been cited as one of the reasons for the crushing defeat in the general elections, expectations are growing both inside and outside the party that the party he leads will be able to carry out structural reforms. However, some point out that it will be difficult to avoid criticism of the ‘Road Yeongnam Party’ as it was the only Yeongnam candidate among the MPs who ran for the leader’s position.
