CANNES, france – Leonardo van Dijl’s debut feature film, “Jill Silent,” premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and was submitted as Belgium’s entry for the academy Award for Best International Feature Film.
The drama centers on Jill, a promising young tennis player at an elite academy. Her world is upended when her coach is accused of misconduct with a former student who later commits suicide.Jill’s teammates pressure her to speak out, but despite her conflicted feelings, she remains loyal to her coach and chooses silence. As the inquiry intensifies, her silence becomes a heavy burden, impacting her relationships and athletic career.
Cannes’ Critics Week Spotlights Emerging Talent
Cannes Film Festival’s “Critics Week,” established in 1962, serves as a platform for discovering and supporting emerging filmmakers. The programme, which focuses on first and second feature films, has launched the careers of directors such as Bernardo Bertolucci, Jacques Audiard, and Alejandro González Iñárritu.
“Jill Silent” (original title: Julie Zwijgt), a 2024 co-production between Belgium and Sweden, was one of seven films selected for the “Critics Week” program at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, where it received two awards.
Van Dijl is no stranger to Cannes; his short film “Stephen” (2020) was previously included in the festival’s out-of-competition program and screened at more than 150 film festivals worldwide.
Coaching Relationships Under Scrutiny
Written by van Dijl and Ruta Berie,”Jill Silent” delves into the complex and often scrutinized relationships between coaches and students in the world of professional sports. The film focuses on minors learning tennis at an elite academy. Following a player’s suicide – allegedly linked to her relationship with the coach – an internal investigation begins, and the coach is suspended.
Jill, played by debutant Tesa van den Broeck, is questioned. Torn between loyalty and the weight of silence, she struggles to reconcile her feelings. Her silence strains her relationships with teammates and the coach, who continues to exert influence over her, even remotely. The film’s co-producers include the Dardenne brothers, while Florian Zeller, the French writer and director of “The Father” (2020), and professional tennis player Naomi Osaka served as executive producers, lending authenticity to the film’s atmosphere.
A Psychological Drama of Inner Turmoil
Early viewers of “Jill Silent” have praised van Dijl’s talent for exploring topical themes and capturing the inner struggles of a young girl. Van Dijl has spoken about his interest in exploring the pressures faced by young women. “When you are under tremendous pressure, you need to focus constantly and gradually turn into survival,” he said in an interview. “It’s not a healthy environment, so step by step I tried to get out of it so she could return to the center of her own life, where she would allow herself to let herself be what she wants.”
The film “Jill Silent” is scheduled to be released in select cinemas starting April 25.
