Relegation Battle in the Brasileirão
Corinthians sit 16th in the 20-team Campeonato Brasileiro Série A table with 32 points, according to Yahoo Sports. However, talkSPORT noted the club has slipped to 17th and into the relegation zone following a heavy defeat to league leaders Palmeiras on Oct. 11, 2026. ESPN added that the squad’s struggles prompted the dismissal of Diniz following a sequence of seven straight league losses.
Despite their domestic league difficulties, Corinthians secured the Supercopa do Brasil earlier in the year by defeating Flamengo 2-0, as reported by talkSPORT. The club also features Dutch forward Memphis Depay, according to ESPN, alongside former Manchester United and West Ham United midfielder Jesse Lingard.
Lingard and the Roster Context
Lingard joined Corinthians in March 2026 after terminating his contract with FC Seoul in South Korea, according to talkSPORT. The 33-year-old English attacking midfielder has scored two goals and provided one assist across 29 appearances for the seven-time Brazilian champions. Channel NewsAsia noted that Seedorf’s arrival brings a high-profile figure to a dressing room trying to avoid the drop.
Seedorf brings an extensive playing pedigree to the bench, having won four Champions League titles with Ajax, Real Madrid, and AC Milan, alongside 87 caps for the Netherlands.
Immediate Fixtures for Corinthians
Corinthians face an immediate fight to climb out of the danger zone as the 2026 campaign heads toward its December conclusion. Yahoo Sports outlined that the team’s position on matchdays remains volatile depending on concurrent results in the Série A standings. Seedorf inherits a squad that must quickly reverse its form under the threat of the relegation termination clause embedded in his contract.
