Clean Creatives, the influential five-year-old campaign advocating for an end to the fossil fuel industry’s reliance on advertising and public relations firms, announced laura Ranzato as its new Executive Director, effective December 12, 2023. Ranzato will succeed Duncan Meisel, who is stepping down from the role.
A Veteran Organizer Takes the Helm
ranzato brings a wealth of experience in environmental advocacy to Clean Creatives. Prior to her appointment, she served as the organization’s Director of Community. Her background includes meaningful roles with prominent organizations such as 350.org,a global grassroots climate movement,NARAL Pro-Choice America,a reproductive rights advocacy group, and the Sierra Club, one of the oldest and most influential environmental organizations in the United states.
Ranzato’s commitment to environmental issues stems from her early experiences. She began her career as a sixth-grade teacher in New Mexico, where, as she told Adweek, she could directly observe the impact of the fossil fuel industry from her classroom window, with two coal plants and a coal mine visible from the school.
She initially collaborated with Clean Creatives as a consultant in 2022 before joining the team full-time earlier in 2023.
The Growing Pressure on the Advertising industry
clean Creatives has gained prominence by publicly identifying advertising and PR agencies that continue to work with fossil fuel companies. The organization argues that these agencies play a critical role in perpetuating the social license of the fossil fuel industry, hindering the transition to a lasting future.
The appointment of Ranzato signals a continued commitment to this strategy. Her experience in building and mobilizing communities will be crucial as clean Creatives seeks to expand its influence and encourage more agencies to sever ties with fossil fuel clients.
Looking Ahead
as of December 3, 2023, the advertising and PR industry faces increasing scrutiny regarding its role in the climate crisis. Clean Creatives, under Ranzato’s leadership, is poised to intensify this pressure, advocating for a future where marketing and communications are aligned with climate solutions rather than fossil fuel interests.
The advertising and PR industry has a responsibility to use its power for good, and that means ending its complicity in the climate crisis.
