The last generation of climate activists want to take part in the European elections. According to their own statements, they now have enough supporters to do this.
The climate protest group Last Generation says it has overcome a hurdle in its candidacy for the European elections. In the past four weeks, 8,800 signatures from supporters had been collected and certified, the activists announced in Berlin on Wednesday. That’s twice as many as necessary. The signatures would be handed over to the Federal Returning Officer on Friday. The Federal Election Committee will then check whether the group will be admitted to the election in June.
The hurdle for a mandate in the European Parliament is comparatively low: there is no threshold clause in Germany for the June election. According to their own information, the Last Generation expects to be able to win a seat with around 250,000 votes. She announced her candidacy at the beginning of February. She then says she collected more than 50,000 euros through crowdfunding and found 150 volunteers.
The group became known for road blockades in which activists stuck themselves to the road. She calls for radical climate protection measures.
