British research group “It must be practiced in daily life… Reduces the risk of death from all causes by 24%”

Physical activity plays an important role in the prevention of non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes. One study showed that climbing stairs, which anyone can easily do in a short period of time, has a significant effect on lengthening your life. Dr Sophie Paddock’s team from the University of East Anglia in Norwich, UK, and the Norfolk/Norwich University Hospital Foundation conducted a study on the effects of stair climbing on 480,000 people aged 35 and over years at the European Society of Cardiology Conference Preventive Cardiology 2024 (ESCPrev 2024) held in Athens, Greece on the 27th. It was revealed that a meta-analysis of the study confirmed the association between climbing stairs and prolonging the of life.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends physical activity, saying it has significant benefits for heart, body and mental health, and helps prevent and manage non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes. However, only one in four people worldwide engage in physical activity at WHO-recommended levels, and it is known that people with insufficient physical activity have a 20-30% higher risk of death than those who are sufficiently active.

In this study, the research team conducted a meta-analysis of nine studies that investigated the effects of climbing stairs, regardless of the number of stairs and the speed of climbing.

The study involved 480,479 people (53% women) aged 35 to 84, including healthy people and those with a history of heart attack and peripheral artery disease. The research team said that most cardiovascular diseases can be prevented through physical activity such as exercise, and that climbing stairs is a practical and easily accessible physical activity. In this study, they investigated the effect of climbing stairs on the risk of cardiovascular disease and early death.

The results of the analysis showed that, compared to people who did not climb stairs, the risk of death from all causes was 24% lower for people who climbed stairs, and the risk of death from cardiovascular disease was lower by 24%. 39%.

Climbing stairs has also been found to be associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, including heart attack, heart failure and stroke. Dr Paddock said: ‘Even a short period of physical activity has a positive effect on health and climbing stairs for a short period of time can easily be incorporated into daily life,’ adding: ‘If you have a choice between stairs and an elevator, taking the stairs is good for heart health “It will happen,” he said.

He added: “The results of this study suggest that the more stairs you climb, the greater the health-improving effect, but this needs to be confirmed through further research.” She added: “We recommend using the calculations at home, at work first.” , or in the area.”
